Tensions erupt in Puttalam after villagers protesting flood neglect and road damage clash with the husband of an NPP Pradeshiya Sabha MP, sparking a heated confrontation caught on video.
A video circulating widely on social media shows a tense clash between villagers and the husband of a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna aligned Pradeshiya Sabha MP, following a dispute that escalated into physical violence.
The incident occurred in the Kaladiya area of Puttalam, where villagers had launched a protest against heavy gravel trucks travelling through their village on a severely damaged road. Residents said the road was already in a dilapidated condition and that continuous use by trucks hauling gravel from a nearby quarry had worsened the situation.
Villagers also alleged that they had received no relief assistance after being affected by recent flooding, despite repeated appeals. According to them, the gravel was being transported to construct a road in another village, while their own infrastructure continued to deteriorate.
Amid the protest, the MP’s husband reportedly arrived at the scene, where a heated exchange took place between him and the villagers. What began as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated, with footage showing both sides engaging in physical attacks.
The video has sparked public debate online, raising questions about the conduct of politically connected individuals, the handling of community grievances, and the growing frustration in flood-affected rural areas.
Residents say the incident reflects deeper tensions over neglect, accountability, and unequal treatment, calling for authorities to address both the road damage and the alleged lack of post-flood relief.
