Explosive investigative leads link a suspected contract killer, a Kandy safe house, and alleged connections to former IGP Deshabandhu Tennakoon in a widening double murder probe.
Fresh developments in the Akuregoda double murder investigation have intensified scrutiny over alleged links to a property said to belong to former IGP Deshabandhu Tennakoon. Investigating officers now suspect that the gunman who killed lawyer Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife may be a hired killer connected to multiple high-profile murders.
Detectives have identified striking similarities between the modus operandi in the Akuregoda double murder and the December 22 shooting of Hiran Kosala, manager of a leading electronics company’s Ambalangoda branch and a Samagi Jana Balawegaya municipal candidate. Authorities believe the same criminal network may be involved.
According to police sources, the suspected shooter and the motorcyclist who transported him were allegedly hiding in a house in Kandy said to be linked to the former IGP. Criminal Investigation Department officers have also uncovered evidence suggesting that additional individuals may have stayed at the property.
Investigators believe that arresting the absconding suspects could reveal crucial details not only about the Akuregoda killings but also about several recent contract-style murders across the country.
Meanwhile, four suspects accused of supplying firearms used in the double murder have been arrested. Police confirmed that two of them are brothers. The vehicle allegedly used to transport the weapons has been seized, and the individual who rented it from a vehicle rental company is reportedly among those in custody.
