From cyclone recovery to digital identity and AI cooperation, Sri Lanka and India signal a renewed push to fast-track connectivity, technology and investment partnerships.
During a meeting held on Friday between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 2026 AI Impact Expo in New Delhi, both leaders reviewed the progress and delays of Indian-supported projects underway in Sri Lanka.
External Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath stated that Prime Minister Modi inquired specifically about Indian-funded infrastructure projects and ongoing investments. He also sought updates on their current status and whether additional assistance was required following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwa. The discussion reflected India’s continued strategic interest in development cooperation and regional stability.
The two leaders also exchanged views on artificial intelligence, digital transformation and technology-driven governance. India pledged support in knowledge sharing related to AI solutions used in public institutions. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating cooperation across physical, digital and energy connectivity. They recognized the importance of emerging technology in advancing economic development and administrative efficiency.
During Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka last April, the two governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding on digital transformation. The agreement, valid for three years, covers feasibility studies, e-readiness assessments and consultation between government officials and technical experts.
A key initiative under this framework is the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity project, aimed at developing and maintaining a biometric-based national identity system. This project is seen as central to digital governance reforms and public service modernization.
This marks President Dissanayake’s second visit to India since assuming office in November 2024, underscoring the deepening Sri Lanka–India partnership.
