The dramatic arrest of former State Intelligence Service head Suresh Sallay marks a significant turning point in the long running Easter Sunday terror investigations, raising fresh questions about intelligence oversight and accountability.
Retired Major General Suresh Sallay, former Director of the State Intelligence Service, has been arrested as a suspect in the ongoing investigations into the April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.
Police confirmed that a special Criminal Investigation Department team carried out the arrest in the Peliyagoda area earlier today. According to initial reports, Sallay was taken into custody while travelling to his workplace at a policy research institute following his retirement from military service.
Eyewitnesses stated that officers intercepted the vehicle he was travelling in and conducted the arrest without any incident. Authorities have not reported any disturbance during the operation.
At the time of the Easter Sunday attacks, Sallay was serving as Counselor and Defense Attaché at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia. He had previously held the position of Director of the Sri Lankan Army Intelligence Division.
