A controversial audio leak alleging backdated coal tenders and high-level political links has ignited fresh debate over transparency, procurement integrity, and governance in Sri Lanka.
A fresh controversy has emerged over a coal tender, following claims that the process may have been manipulated after deadlines had passed.
Well known journalist Uvindu Kurukulasuriya brought the issue to public attention through a detailed revelation shared on his social media platform, pointing to a leaked audio recording involving a senior official connected to the coal sector.
According to the information highlighted, the recording appears to expose serious irregularities linked to the recently awarded coal spot tender, raising concerns over procurement transparency and compliance with due process.
The coal spot tender in question had reportedly been awarded to Haley’s Company, but what has drawn scrutiny is the timeline of the documentation submitted for approval.

It is alleged that key tender documents were handed over after the official closing date, and despite this delay, they were later accepted by assigning earlier dates, effectively backdating the submission process.
Kurukulasuriya further claims that the audio recording includes statements from the senior coal company official suggesting that powerful figures, including the President and businessman Dhammika Perera, were involved in efforts to protect him.
In addition, the name of another influential individual is also said to have been mentioned within the recording, intensifying speculation around political connections and institutional interference.
The journalist questioned the public directly, asking whether they had listened to the recording and highlighting how the alleged backdating had been carried out, bringing the issue into sharper national focus.
