Kusal Mendis is likely to lead Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20 teams as the interim SLC board moves to rebuild white-ball cricket.
Kusal Mendis is being considered for a major leadership role as Sri Lanka’s new interim cricket administration begins decisive white-ball reforms.
Following the resignation of the former Sri Lanka Cricket Board of Directors, including former President Shammi Silva, the new interim governing board appointed by the Sports Minister has begun taking several key steps to raise the standard of cricket in the country.
According to reports, the interim board is considering appointing Kusal Mendis as captain of both the ODI and T20 white-ball teams for the upcoming tour of the West Indies.
The 31-year-old Mendis is expected to replace Charith Asalanka, who currently captains the ODI side, and Dasun Shanaka, who leads the T20 team.
The main objective of the interim board is to bring stability, discipline, and clear direction to Sri Lanka’s limited-overs squads ahead of the next international schedule.
However, despite the expected white-ball leadership changes, Dhananjaya de Silva is likely to continue as captain of the Test team.
The interim governing board, appointed during the recent crisis in Sri Lanka cricket administration, has placed strong focus on player discipline, performance standards, and team management.
This possible leadership change is therefore being viewed as one important step in the wider reform process.
Cricket sources indicate that the decision has been taken jointly with the selection committee, with particular focus on building strong leadership ahead of future World Cup tournaments.
