Namal Rajapaksa says his Pilleiyan prison visit is already in official records, questioning CID’s France trip and public spending.
Namal Rajapaksa has questioned why public funds were used for investigators to travel to France when his prison visit to Pilleiyan is already recorded in official prison log books.
The National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and Member of Parliament made the remarks in a social media post, responding to media reports that the Criminal Investigation Department had informed court about his visit to Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pilleiyan.
Rajapaksa said the government should focus on delivering real results for the people instead of engaging in political theatre and chasing media headlines.
His message was posted on X, formerly Twitter, after he said he learned through the media that the CID had referred in court to his visit to Pilleiyan.
Rajapaksa stated that it was no secret that he had visited Pilleiyan, the leader of the TMVP party, when he was imprisoned during the 2018/19 period.
He said the prison records of those visits are available and can be obtained at any time if required.
According to Rajapaksa, Pilleiyan was a partner in their alliance at the time, having contested the 2015 presidential election as well as the 2018 local government elections.
Rajapaksa further said he had learned that the CID had travelled all the way to France as part of its investigation into the Easter attack.
He said this raises serious questions about the government’s priorities.
“If officers travelled such a great distance merely to confirm that I went to meet Pilleiyan, that is clearly a waste of public funds,” he said.
Rajapaksa also stated that, to his knowledge, Pilleiyan is not currently being held in remand in connection with the Easter attack.
He questioned who the government was trying to convince by staging what he described as media spectacles.
Rajapaksa alleged that the National People’s Power had circulated various stories about the Easter attack on different occasions.
He warned that if the government is now attempting to use the tragedy to target political opponents, it would amount to a grave injustice to the victims and their families, who are still waiting for real answers and justice.
Rajapaksa said they are always ready to face any fair investigation.
He also said they would extend their fullest cooperation to the Criminal Investigation Department to resolve any existing suspicions openly and transparently.
He added that the government’s priority should be meaningful results for the people, not political theatre or media-driven headlines.
