Sri Lankan Rupee rebounds 2.7% against the US dollar, becoming Asia’s best-performing currency on May 22, Bloomberg reports.
Sri Lankan Rupee gains made headlines after Bloomberg reported that it became Asia’s best-performing currency on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The rupee, which had been continuously weakening over the past several days, strengthened sharply against the US dollar on that day, according to the international media network.
On May 22 alone, the Sri Lankan Rupee recorded a maximum growth of 2.7% against the US dollar.
This marked the highest single-day appreciation of the rupee since March 2023.
The sharp rebound also ended nine consecutive days of depreciation.
The rupee had fallen to its lowest level in more than three years on May 21 due to rising crude oil prices in the world market.
However, Sri Lanka’s recovery since the 2022 economic crisis, along with stabilization measures implemented by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, helped the currency strengthen again.
Nevertheless, from the beginning of 2026 until May, the rupee had still depreciated by 4.5%.
By April, inflation in the country had also risen to 4.7%.
Although the government has succeeded in rebuilding foreign exchange reserves, analysts warn that Sri Lanka’s economy remains vulnerable to external shocks.
Fuel costs, in particular, continue to pose a risk to the country’s fragile economic position.
