Mistress murder case shocks Rangala after police arrest a 30-year-old suspect accused of killing a woman and hiding her body.
The mistress murder case in Rangala has shocked the area after police arrested a 30-year-old man accused of killing a young woman, hiding her body in a swamp, and fleeing.
The suspect, who had reportedly been away from the area for several days, was arrested yesterday, the 3rd, by officers of the Rangala Police after he returned to his home and was found in the garden.
At the time of the arrest, police noticed a strange odour coming from the suspect. He was immediately admitted to the Teldeniya Hospital for treatment on suspicion that he had consumed poison.
The murder came to light after the suspect himself had earlier lodged a complaint regarding the disappearance of the young woman.
However, suspicions arose over the nature of that complaint, prompting police to question the suspect’s mother extensively.
During questioning, it was revealed that the suspect had allegedly beaten the young woman to death and buried her in a swampy area near the house.
Acting on this information, Rangala Police obtained a court order and excavated the relevant swamp.
During the excavation, officers discovered the body of the murdered woman inside a pit dug to a depth of around three feet.
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Wasana Sandamali Weerasekara, who had been working at a garment factory.
Following an order issued by Magistrate Kamal S. Jayathilaka, her remains were sent to the Judicial Medical Officer at Teldeniya Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police investigations have further revealed that the suspect is a married man who had abandoned his lawful wife and had been living with the deceased young woman for approximately four years.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Rangala Police.
