Wanathe Chathu arrest follows a covert intelligence operation in the UAE targeting an alleged underworld operative linked to Kanjipani Imran.
Sri Lankan intelligence agencies have carried out the Wanathe Chathu arrest in Dubai, apprehending Avishka Madhushan Abeygunawardena in a coordinated operation with international security partners. Known as “Wanathe Chathu,” he is described as a top-tier underworld operative and the alleged primary assassination strategist for fugitive drug lord Kanjipani Imran.
Authorities say Chathu maintained close links to networks connected to major crimes in Sri Lanka. From abroad, he allegedly coordinated contract killings and extortion operations while funding a lavish lifestyle through illegal proceeds.
Operating from upscale locations in the United Arab Emirates, including Ras Al-Khaimah, Chathu reportedly built a multi-million-rupee fortune through domestic drug trafficking, extortion, and contract killings.
Wanathe Chathu Arrest Followed Weeks of Tracking
Intelligence files indicate that Chathu used the proceeds to travel in high-end luxury vehicles and move between exclusive high-rise residential complexes under false identities. Investigators believed he considered himself beyond the reach of Sri Lankan law enforcement.
The breakthrough in the Wanathe Chathu arrest followed weeks of intensive digital tracking. Sri Lankan intelligence operatives monitored his electronic footprint and communication signals across the Gulf.
Regional cyber-intelligence systems reportedly flagged Chathu after he altered his digital footprint amid shifting geopolitical tensions. Local intelligence agencies then coordinated with overseas security forces and launched a rapid raid.
Security teams surrounded his residence and detained him before he could escape or resist.
Following the execution of necessary international warrants, local authorities have finalized arrangements to transport Chathu and other associated underworld figures back to Sri Lanka under maximum security.
The arrest marks a significant development in Sri Lanka’s continuing crackdown on transnational organized crime networks operating from safe havens abroad.
