A private bank lawyer is facing serious legal and professional consequences after being arrested for allegedly shoplifting chicken, mutton and other items from a suburban Colombo supermarket. Police say CCTV footage also links her to an earlier alleged theft of sardines, raising the case beyond a one-off incident.
A prominent attorney employed by a private bank was arrested Thursday night after allegedly turning a suburban Colombo supermarket into her personal, unpaid fish and meat market.
Mount Lavinia police apprehended the suspect as she attempted to exit the store. A subsequent search of her belongings by startled officers turned up an eclectic haul of stolen goods: fresh cuts of chicken and mutton, a toothbrush, and a box of lunch sheets.
However, investigators say Thursday’s heist was just the latest episode.
A review of the supermarket’s CCTV footage revealed the lawyer was a repeat offender. Closed-circuit cameras from June 17 caught her systematically stuffing saliyo (sardines) into her handbag.
The legal professional now faces a harsh reality check. Beyond potential criminal charges, a theft conviction would trigger immediate disciplinary action from the bar, likely ending her legal career and costing her the corporate bank job.
The Mount Lavinia Police department is continuing its investigation.
