Grade 6 English module controversy deepens after government tells court the obscene website link was not part of a conspiracy.
Grade 6 English module controversy has deepened after the government informed court that the inclusion of a link to an inappropriate obscene website was not a conspiracy.
The link had appeared in the Grade 6 English language module prepared by the National Institute of Education for this year.
President of the Association of Education Professionals, Venerable Ulpane Sumangala Thero, said the government had made this position clear through a “B” report submitted to the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.
The case was taken up before the Gangodawila Court in Nugegoda. Speaking to the media afterward, the Thero said that if the incident was not a conspiracy, then it was clear it had been done intentionally.
He said the government had earlier claimed loudly that the matter was a conspiracy, but the reports now submitted to court showed a change in that position.
Venerable Ulpane Sumangala Thero also accused the Criminal Investigation Department of attempting to protect those responsible for the offense.
He said the Education Minister, the Secretary and all responsible authorities should be punished over what he described as an attempt to expose Grade 6 children to obscene material.
The Thero further alleged that the government was using children as bargaining chips to preserve control and power.
He warned that under the present administration, the country’s education system was heading toward serious destruction.
