Sophia Dunkley’s fifty and a late England surge proved decisive as Scotland’s spirited chase ended 38 runs short at the Women’s T20 World Cup.
England preserved their unbeaten ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 record with a 38-run victory over Scotland at Headingley, using a spectacular late batting surge to build a total their opponents could not quite challenge. Sophia Dunkley made 57 before Freya Kemp and Danielle Gibson lifted England to 200 for five, with Scotland responding boldly but finishing on 162 for seven.
Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce won the toss and elected to bowl against an England side missing regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt because of a calf injury. Charlie Dean took charge, but England’s innings began badly when Kirstie Gordon dismissed Amy Jones with the first ball of the match. Danni Wyatt-Hodge also fell for seven, leaving the hosts 51 for two early in the seventh over.
Dunkley and Alice Capsey restored control with positive batting through the middle overs. Dunkley struck eight fours and one six in her 37-ball 57, completing her first half-century at a Women’s T20 World Cup. Capsey contributed 40 from 25 deliveries, finding six boundaries as England rebuilt without allowing Scotland to settle into a defensive field.
Heather Knight added 25 from 19 balls, but Scotland continued to find enough wickets to keep the total within reach. When England slipped to 139 for five after 16.3 overs, a final score around 175 appeared more likely than 200. Kemp and Gibson then produced the decisive partnership of the match.
Kemp struck four fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 39 from only 16 deliveries, while Gibson was even quicker, making 30 not out from 11 balls with five fours and a six. Their unbroken stand produced 61 runs from 21 deliveries, including 59 across the final three overs, and propelled England to exactly 200. Gordon was Scotland’s most successful bowler with two for 30.
Scotland refused to be intimidated by the target. Katherine Fraser attacked from the beginning, scoring 23 from 13 balls with two fours and two sixes, and helped her side reach 52 for one from the powerplay. Darcey Carter maintained that momentum with 29 from 23 deliveries as Scotland remained prepared to challenge England’s fielders rather than simply limit the margin.
England regained control through Sophie Ecclestone. The left-arm spinner bowled Kathryn Bryce and then removed Carter in successive overs, with the dismissal of the Scotland captain bringing Ecclestone her 150th T20 international wicket. Her spell of two for 23 slowed the chase just as Scotland needed to increase its scoring rate.
Sarah Bryce responded with 34 from 24 balls, while Pippa Sproul made 27 and Gordon finished unbeaten on 23. Their resistance ensured England could not relax, but the size of the target left Scotland requiring an unrealistic finish. Kemp and Gibson completed their all-round contributions with one wicket each as Scotland reached 162 for seven.
Dunkley received the Player of the Match award after providing the innings that held England together before the late acceleration. England’s third win from three matches kept them at the top of Group B and strengthened their position ahead of a major meeting with West Indies. Scotland remained in the qualification contest, but their match against New Zealand became essential after a second defeat in three games.
