USA reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a match remaining after a Cameron Burgess own goal and Alex Freeman header secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team followed its opening 4-1 win over Paraguay with another controlled performance, overcoming the absence of injured captain Christian Pulisic to maintain a perfect Group D record.
Australia arrived with confidence after defeating Türkiye 2-0 in their first match, but the Socceroos struggled to match the co-hosts’ intensity during a one-sided opening half.
The United States pressed aggressively and moved the ball quickly into wide areas, forcing Australia to defend close to its own penalty box. Folarin Balogun, who scored twice against Paraguay, played a central role in creating the opening goal.
Balogun raced down the left in the 11th minute and drove a dangerous low delivery across the face of goal. Burgess attempted to deal with the cross but diverted the ball beyond his own goalkeeper, handing the Americans the early breakthrough.
The goal settled the home side and placed Australia under sustained pressure. Pochettino’s players continued to attack with confidence, while the Socceroos offered little threat during a sluggish first-half display.
Freeman doubled the advantage in the 43rd minute. Sergiño Dest’s deflected effort dropped invitingly inside the area, allowing the 21-year-old defender to head home his first World Cup goal.
The strike was checked by video review before being confirmed, giving the United States a deserved two-goal cushion before the interval. Freeman also became one of the youngest American players to score at a World Cup.
Australia showed greater urgency after halftime and adopted a more physical approach as they attempted to force their way back into the contest. The Socceroos produced several promising moments, but the American defence protected its clean sheet.
Pochettino’s team was not always flawless in possession, yet its organisation and work rate prevented Australia from creating the sustained pressure needed to change the result. The victory represented the Americans’ first clean sheet of the tournament.
The six points collected from the opening two matches are the United States’ highest group-stage total at a World Cup. Paraguay’s subsequent victory over Türkiye also ensured that the co-hosts would finish first in Group D.
Australia remain on three points and will meet Paraguay in their final group game, with qualification still within reach. Their improved second-half effort offered encouragement, although a sharper start will be essential.
The United States conclude the group stage against Türkiye in Los Angeles on June 25. With progression and top spot already secured, Pochettino now has an opportunity to manage workloads before the Round of 32.
