Saibari’s early Morocco goal condemns Scotland to a 1-0 World Cup defeat, leaving Steve Clarke’s team with a decisive Brazil test ahead.
Ismael Saibari’s early Morocco goal left Scotland facing a decisive final Group C encounter against Brazil after Steve Clarke’s team suffered a frustrating 1-0 World Cup defeat in Foxborough.
Scotland entered the match encouraged by their opening victory over Haiti, but the positive atmosphere surrounding their first World Cup campaign in 28 years was punctured after only 71 seconds.
Morocco moved the ball sharply from the opening whistle and exploited Scotland before their defensive structure had settled. Saibari found the space required to finish the attack and give the African side an immediate advantage.
The goal was initially the fastest scored at the 2026 tournament, although Matías Galarza later surpassed it for Paraguay. More importantly, it allowed Morocco to control the contest without taking excessive risks.
Walid Regragui’s team dominated much of the opening half with technically polished football. Morocco circulated possession confidently and repeatedly forced Scotland to defend deeper than Clarke would have wanted.
Scotland struggled to connect their midfield with the attack and created little during the first period. The absence of Aaron Hickey reduced their options, while Morocco’s pressure prevented the Scots from building sustained possession.
The pattern changed after halftime when Scott McTominay was given greater licence to move forward. Scotland became more direct, contested second balls with greater aggression and gradually pushed Morocco towards their own penalty area.
A major moment arrived when McTominay went down following a challenge inside the box. Scotland appealed strongly for a penalty, but the referee allowed play to continue and the video officials did not intervene.
The decision increased Scottish frustration as their best spell failed to produce an equaliser. Substitutions added energy and urgency, but Morocco defended the central areas well and limited the quality of Scotland’s final pass.
Angus Gunn also made important saves at the opposite end, ensuring the game remained alive until the final whistle. Morocco had opportunities to settle the contest but could not add to Saibari’s opening goal.
The defeat leaves Scotland on three points after two matches. Although qualification remains possible under the expanded 48-team format, their final assignment could hardly be more demanding.
Scotland face five-time champions Brazil in Miami on June 24. A draw may be enough to secure progression, while victory would remove all uncertainty and guarantee a place in the Round of 32.
Morocco will meet Haiti in their final Group C match on the same day. Two victories from two have placed the Atlas Lions in a strong position, while Scotland must quickly recover before the most significant test of their campaign.
