Egypt draw 1-1 with Iran to reach the World Cup knockouts for the first time, surviving a saved penalty, crossbar scare and late VAR drama.
Egypt reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time after holding Iran to a dramatic 1-1 draw in Seattle, surviving a late disallowed goal and a frantic finish.
Egypt had already placed themselves in a strong position after drawing with Belgium and beating New Zealand. Iran, unbeaten but winless, needed a positive result to maintain their hopes of a first knockout appearance.
The match exploded into life immediately. Egypt took the lead inside five minutes when a move involving Mohamed Salah ended with Mahmoud Saber’s effort slipping through Alireza Beiranvand. The early goal seemed to place Egypt in control, but Iran responded quickly.
Ramin Rezaeian equalised in the 14th minute from a tight angle, punishing Egypt’s defensive uncertainty and turning the game into a tense battle between two teams with everything still to protect.
Iran then had a major chance to take command when Mehdi Taremi stepped up for a first-half penalty. Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved it, a moment that would become one of the defining incidents of the match and Egypt’s campaign.
The game became scrappy after the fast start. Egypt tried to manage the draw, while Iran struggled to turn possession into clear chances. The tension increased as the clock moved towards stoppage time and Iran pushed bodies forward.
The late drama was extraordinary. Taremi headed against the crossbar, then Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score a dramatic 93rd-minute winner. Iran’s bench erupted, but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for offside. Egypt survived.
The final whistle confirmed Egypt’s place in the round of 32, where they will face Australia in Dallas. Shobeir’s penalty save, Saber’s early goal and Egypt’s late resilience became the story of a historic night.
Iran finished third with three points after three draws, but later results eliminated them from contention. Their campaign will be remembered for missed chances, travel complications and frustration. Egypt, by contrast, move forward with belief, discipline and Salah still central to their hopes.
