Switzerland advance to last 16 after beating Algeria 2-0, as Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye end an 88-year World Cup wait.
Switzerland advance to last 16 after ending an 88-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory with a calm 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver.
It was one of Switzerland’s most complete performances of the tournament. Murat Yakin’s side entered the round-of-32 tie unbeaten after topping Group B, and they played with the confidence of a team in control.
Algeria arrived with belief after surviving a dramatic 3-3 draw with Austria. However, they were quickly pushed into a defensive battle by a Swiss team that started with speed, shape and purpose.
Johan Manzambi again stood at the heart of Switzerland’s attacking threat. The 20-year-old had already become one of the breakout players of the tournament, and he created the first decisive moment in the 10th minute.
From the left, Manzambi drove forward with confidence and whipped a low cross across goal. Breel Embolo reacted like a true centre-forward, arriving in the right place to sweep the ball home.
The early goal gave Switzerland control. It also placed Algeria under immediate pressure.
Switzerland Advance To Last 16 With Early Control
Algeria tried to respond through Riyad Mahrez and Ibrahim Maza, but they struggled to create clean chances. Mahrez delivered a dangerous cross before halftime, yet Maza could not convert. Switzerland reached the interval with their lead intact.
The second half began disastrously for Algeria. They failed twice to clear danger inside their own penalty area, and Dan Ndoye punished the mistake in the 46th minute.
The forward fired Switzerland’s second goal into the net, giving Yakin’s team a commanding advantage. From there, Switzerland managed the match with maturity.
Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler controlled midfield. Manuel Akanji helped organise the defence, while Gregor Kobel rarely faced serious trouble. Algeria had spells of possession, but they lacked the cutting edge needed to change the match.
Vladimir Petković made attacking changes, including the introduction of Amine Gouiri and Jaouen Hadjam. Still, Switzerland’s shape remained compact and disciplined.
Algeria’s best late opening came when Anis Hadj Moussa forced a save from Kobel. However, the effort looked more like a cross than a clear strike.
Manzambi Stars As Swiss End Long Wait
Switzerland could have added a third when Fabian Rieder missed from close range. Yet the result never looked seriously threatened. The Swiss finished with cleaner chances, greater authority and a defensive performance that matched their attacking efficiency.
The victory was historic. Switzerland had suffered repeated knockout exits in recent World Cups, but this win ended a wait dating back to 1938. It also gave them three consecutive World Cup victories for the first time.
Algeria exit after a spirited campaign that produced drama, goals and resilience. However, they were second best in Vancouver.
Switzerland advance to last 16 with momentum, belief and a new young star in Manzambi. They now face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana on July 7, returning to the same venue with history behind them and confidence rising.
