Gonçalo Ramos scores in stoppage time as Portugal beat Croatia 2-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo making World Cup knockout history.
Portugal beat Croatia in a breathless Toronto knockout clash as Gonçalo Ramos struck deep into stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory, sending Portugal straight into the last 16.
The round of 32 meeting carried history, pressure and emotion. Portugal wanted to keep Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup charge alive, while Croatia aimed for another major knockout run after reaching the 2018 final and finishing third in 2022.
Portugal made one attacking change before kickoff. Rafael Leão replaced João Félix and joined Ronaldo and Pedro Neto in the front line. Croatia kept the same starting side that had beaten Ghana, trusting Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić and Ivan Perišić to dictate the rhythm.
Portugal Beat Croatia After Perišić Strike
Portugal controlled long spells of the first half but failed to create enough clear chances. Ronaldo faced tight marking, Bruno Fernandes struggled to find space between the lines, and Croatia defended with patience, experience and discipline.
Croatia returned stronger after halftime and took the lead in the 53rd minute. Josip Stanišić found Ivan Perišić, who controlled the ball and sent a calm finish across goal into the far corner. The strike stunned Portugal and briefly gave Croatia command of the contest.
The game then turned chaotic. Nikola Vlašić believed he had doubled Croatia’s advantage, but officials ruled out his finish for offside. Portugal responded almost immediately, as Leão surged forward and smashed a powerful shot against the crossbar.
Ronaldo also thought he had scored when he lifted the ball over Dominik Livaković, only for another offside flag to cut short the celebration. His moment came in the 68th minute after Vlašić pulled down Renato Veiga inside the area. Ronaldo stepped up and drove his penalty straight down the middle.
Ramos Winner Keeps Portugal Dream Alive
The goal carried major significance. At 41, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match. It was also the first knockout-stage goal of his World Cup career. Roberto Martínez replaced him in the 81st minute, leaving Portugal to close the game without their captain.
Ramos then produced the defining moment in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The substitute climbed above the Croatian defence and powered a header into the net, sparking wild celebrations among Portugal’s players and supporters.
Croatia still created one final twist. Joško Gvardiol appeared to equalise in the 103rd minute, but VAR ruled out the goal after the ball touched Igor Matanović and placed Gvardiol offside. The decision ended Croatia’s hopes and triggered frustration among their fans.
After the final whistle, Portugal’s players paid an emotional tribute to the late Diogo Jota. Ronaldo wore Jota’s No. 21 shirt, adding a powerful human layer to an already dramatic night.
The way Portugal beat Croatia now sets up a round-of-16 clash with Spain in Dallas. After surviving Toronto, Portugal will believe their World Cup dream remains firmly alive.
