Sri Lanka traffic congestion ranks worst in Asia and third globally in Numbeo’s mid-2026 index, with a score of 254.5 points.
Sri Lanka traffic congestion has been ranked the worst in Asia, according to Numbeo’s Traffic Index for mid-2026.
Sri Lanka recorded 254.5 points, placing it ahead of Bangladesh with 246.2 points. Iran followed with 215.3, while India scored 205.1 and Indonesia recorded 191.1.
Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, the Philippines and Pakistan also appeared among Asia’s 10 most congested countries.
However, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam recorded comparatively lower congestion levels.
Globally, Sri Lanka ranked third for traffic congestion. Nigeria topped the index with 320.3 points, while Costa Rica placed second. Bangladesh and Kenya completed the global top five.
Numbeo calculates the ranking using several factors. These include average travel time, delays caused by congestion, fuel inefficiency and carbon dioxide emissions.
The findings highlight the serious scale of Sri Lanka traffic congestion and its impact on commuters, transport costs and the environment.
The ranking also reflects the wider challenge of worsening road congestion across Asia as traffic volumes and urban pressure continue to grow.
