The Homagama factory fire killed five people at a helmet manufacturing plant as emergency crews searched the debris after controlling the blaze.
Five people have died in the Homagama factory fire that broke out at a helmet manufacturing facility in the Katuwana industrial zone this morning (21).
Sources said search teams discovered the five bodies after firefighters brought the blaze under control. Authorities suspect the victims were factory workers who became trapped inside and could not escape as the fire spread.
The Police Media Unit confirmed that crews had controlled the fire at the Katuwana industrial zone factory.
However, search operations are continuing through the burnt debris as emergency teams check the site for further victims or evidence.
The fire department said eight fire engines were deployed to contain the Homagama factory fire. Investigations and recovery work remain underway at the helmet manufacturing premises following the deadly incident.
