Rumesh Tharanga world number one status returns after his Lausanne Diamond League victory, moving him ahead of Germany’s Julian Weber.
Rumesh Tharanga world number one status has been restored after the Sri Lankan javelin star moved back to the top of the latest World Athletics rankings.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist reclaimed the No. 1 position in the men’s javelin throw rankings yesterday, August 26.
According to the latest rankings released by World Athletics, Tharanga moved ahead of Germany’s Julian Weber, who previously occupied the top position.
The latest rise follows another major international performance from the Sri Lankan, who has continued to establish himself among the world’s leading javelin throwers.
Rumesh Tharanga World Number One After Lausanne Victory
The ranking change came largely after Tharanga’s outstanding performance at the 12th stage of the Diamond League athletics series in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Competing on August 21, Tharanga produced a throw of 88.14 metres.
That effort was enough to defeat a strong international field and secure first place.
The victory lifted Tharanga’s world-ranking points total to 1,363.
Germany’s Julian Weber, who had led the standings before the Lausanne event, now sits second with 1,342 points.
Weber had been expected to compete in Lausanne but withdrew at the last moment because of a technical issue.
His absence, combined with Tharanga’s victory and strong points return, helped reshape the top of the men’s javelin rankings.
The result represents another major achievement for Sri Lankan athletics on the international stage.
Strong Form Continues From Glasgow to Lausanne
Tharanga has maintained impressive consistency following his Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow.
There, he produced a personal best of 89.75 metres to secure the title.
Since then, the Sri Lankan has repeatedly crossed the 85-metre mark at several major international competitions.
That consistency has helped him remain competitive against leading European and Asian throwers.
International athletics analysts have pointed to his rise as a significant moment for Sri Lanka and South Asian sport.
A Sri Lankan athlete holding the world No. 1 ranking in an event dominated in recent years by some of the strongest throwers from Europe and Asia marks a major milestone.
Tharanga’s current form also adds further intrigue to the upcoming Diamond League Finals.
With the new rankings now released, competition at the top is expected to intensify as the season moves towards its decisive stages.
For Sri Lanka, however, the immediate significance is clear.
Rumesh Tharanga world number one status confirms that his recent success is not based on a single performance, but on a sustained run of world-class results.
