Sri Lanka police uniform changes are being prepared as part of wider reforms to improve professionalism and conditions in the Police service.
COLOMBO – The Government is moving ahead with plans to introduce a redesigned uniform for the Sri Lanka Police as part of a broader programme of reforms to the service, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has said.
Wijepala announced the latest plans while attending the 85th Police Athletic Meet, where he outlined measures aimed at improving professional standards, training, promotions and working conditions across the Police service.
Preparations for the new uniform are already underway, according to the Minister.
Wijepala had previously said the proposed change was being developed in consultation with police officers, with an earlier target of introducing the uniform in January or February 2027.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has separately said a new police uniform is expected to be introduced around the middle of next year as part of wider efforts to modernise the service.
No final design details were announced in the latest remarks.
Wider Police Reforms Planned
The Government is also preparing to recruit another 10,000 police officers during the coming year, Wijepala said.
Promotions that have been delayed for five years are expected to be granted within 2026, based on factors including seniority, performance, efficiency tests and examinations.
Authorities are additionally developing a revised transfer system aimed at allowing officers to obtain postings closer to their homes.
Training opportunities are also being expanded. Wijepala said nearly 1,000 police officers had received overseas training during the previous two years, with plans to extend such opportunities across ranks.
Cabinet approval has also been granted for a special risk allowance to be introduced through the 2027 Budget, according to the Minister.
Other proposals include providing electric motorcycles and improving infrastructure available to officers.
The Government has presented the measures as part of its programme to modernise the Police service and improve its relationship with the public. Details of the new uniform, including its final design and precise introduction date, have yet to be formally released.
