Four suspects have been arrested in a Kanyakumari POCSO case involving the alleged grooming, assault and exploitation of a school student.
KANYAKUMARI — An online relationship initiated through social media allegedly spiralled into a harrowing ordeal for a Class 12 student, culminating in her abduction, repeated sexual assault, and exploitation by her self-proclaimed partner and his associates.
Local law enforcement authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the alleged crime and invoked provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The Genesis of a Digital Entanglement
According to details emerging from police investigations, the victim, a high-school student from Kanyakumari, spent considerable time on social media platforms, particularly Instagram.
During her online interactions, she connected with a young man from the Thadikkarankonam region.
What began as casual digital communication reportedly developed into an intense virtual relationship. Trust was established under the guise of teenage romance, eventually prompting the minor to leave her family home to meet her online contact in person.
However, investigators allege that the situation turned sinister once the victim met the accused.
Rather than a genuine meeting, the young man allegedly lured her to a rented lodge, where he sexually assaulted her.
Police further allege that the perpetrator secretly recorded the assault on his mobile phone, setting the stage for months of psychological coercion and blackmail.
Blackmail and Escalating Trauma
Armed with the compromising digital recording, the principal suspect allegedly subjected the minor to further intimidation and coercion.
He reportedly demanded that she comply with additional demands under the threat of releasing the explicit video publicly on Instagram.
When the victim refused, the accused allegedly carried out the threat by uploading the footage to social media platforms.
The circulation of the video caused severe psychological distress, prompting the student to confide in a relative.
However, what was intended as a plea for safety allegedly resulted in further betrayal.
Extended Ordeal and Rescue
According to police findings, the relative who offered to help the victim instead allegedly exploited her vulnerable state and subjected her to further abuse before handing her over to another associate.
The victim was subsequently allegedly detained inside an apartment for an entire week.
During this period, police say she was subjected to continuous psychological and physical intimidation, forced alcohol consumption, and repeated abuse.
After enduring seven days of alleged captivity and abuse, the teenager reportedly managed to escape and return to her family home.
Upon her return, she recounted the ordeal to her parents, who immediately approached local law enforcement and lodged a complaint.
Police Crackdown and Legal Action
Acting on the parents’ complaint, local police launched an intensive investigation into the alleged cyber-enabled crime.
Cybercrime units reportedly tracked the digital footprint of the uploaded media, while local teams conducted raids to locate the suspects.
Law enforcement officers confirmed the arrest of four individuals allegedly involved in the case, including the principal social media contact and other alleged accomplices.
Police have reportedly registered a case under six separate legal provisions, including the POCSO Act.
Growing Concerns Over Online Safety
The disturbing incident has sparked renewed discussion regarding youth safety, parental awareness of digital media use, and the rising prevalence of online grooming.
Child rights activists have called for heightened vigilance on platforms such as Instagram, alongside stricter age-verification mechanisms and faster reporting systems for exploitative content involving minors.
As legal proceedings continue, child welfare services are reportedly providing counselling and support to the survivor.
