* Dutch made to toil for victory – (Match 7)
By Marlon Dale Ferreira
Right-handed batter Max O’Dowd’s unbeaten half-century guided the Netherlands to a six-wicket triumph over Nepal in the 7th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
O’Dowd’s composed 54* off 48 balls, featuring four fours and one six, was instrumental in the Dutch side successfully chasing down the target. Playing at a strike rate of 112.50, O’Dowd anchored the innings and added crucial runs to the scoreboard.
Vikramjit Singh contributed 22 runs off 28 balls with four boundaries, making him the second-highest run-getter for the Netherlands. His partnership with O’Dowd played a pivotal role in the successful chase.
Despite the loss, Nepal’s bowling was commendable in the second innings. Rohit Paudel’s side set a modest target of 109 runs, ensuring the Dutch team faced challenges in scoring.
The Nepalese bowlers struggled to take early wickets, which ultimately cost them the match. Sompal Kami, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Abinash Bohara each picked up a wicket in their spells.
In the first innings, the Netherlands’ decision to field first after winning the toss proved effective as they restricted Nepal’s batting lineup. Kushal Bhurtel (7 runs off 10 balls) and Aasif Sheikh (4 runs off 8 balls) opened for Nepal but failed to provide a strong start. Tim Pringle’s early breakthrough in the second over removed Aasif, setting the tone for the Dutch dominance.
Nepal’s skipper, Rohit Paudel, stood out with 35 runs off 37 balls, including five fours, making him the highest scorer for his team. Gulsan Jha (14 runs off 15 balls) and Karan KC (17 runs off 12 balls) contributed to the score but couldn’t build significant partnerships.
The Dutch bowlers were relentless, with Pringle and Logan van Beek each taking three wickets. Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede added two wickets apiece, bundling Nepal out for 106 in 19.2 overs.
This comprehensive performance by the Netherlands highlighted their bowling strength and batting resilience, marking a strong start in the T20 World Cup.
