The Computer Emergency Response Forum (CERT) has issued an alert regarding a fraudulent messaging scam that falsely claims to offer Rs. 50,000 to individuals who voted for the ‘National People’s Power’ in the last election.
Charuka Damunupola, a Senior Engineer at CERT, reported receiving numerous complaints from the public about these deceptive messages. The scam involves unsolicited texts informing recipients that they are eligible for the cash incentive, prompting recipients to click on links provided in the messages.
In light of this, CERT strongly advises the public to refrain from clicking on any links included in these messages and to avoid sharing them with others. This scam highlights the need for increased vigilance among voters, especially in the wake of elections, as cybercriminals often exploit such situations to deceive individuals.
CERT emphasizes the importance of verifying information through official channels and encourages anyone who encounters such messages to report them immediately to the appropriate authorities.
