A high-level European Union delegation visiting Sri Lanka has expressed strong appreciation for the new government’s direction and reforms aligned with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.
The remarks came during a meeting held today (30) between the EU representatives and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath.
According to a statement from the Minister’s office, the EU praised the government’s progressive policies, particularly the commitment to strengthening independent commissions, which they noted as a vital step toward good governance.
The delegation further lauded the government’s handling of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, especially its time-bound implementation, and offered technical support to ensure international standards are met.
Another highlight was the EU’s recognition of Sri Lanka’s strategic importance for GSP+ concessions, which could significantly impact the island’s trade and export opportunities. The visiting officials confirmed that the report compiled during this visit would carry weight in shaping future decisions.
Moreover, the delegation encouraged Sri Lanka to begin preparing for labor law reforms, expected to be in place by January 2028, to ensure compliance with global labor standards.
In response, Minister Vijitha Herath thanked the EU for its consistent support, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to maintaining these reforms and strengthening international partnerships.
The official statement from the Minister’s office confirmed the EU’s continued interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in the areas of trade, governance, and technical assistance.
