Ambalangoda Modara Perahera has been cancelled after alleged underworld threats forced committee members to leave the area or go into hiding.
The Ambalangoda Modara Perahera has been cancelled after alleged underworld threats linked to a dispute between rival organised crime figures forced several organising committee members to leave the area.
Organisers have abandoned plans for the 83rd annual Esala festival at the Modara Devalaya in Ambalangoda. Police said the main security concern stems from an alleged dispute involving “Loku Patti,” who is currently in remand custody, and “Karandeniya Sudda,” who is reportedly overseas.
Committee members have also allegedly received telephone death threats warning them against organising the procession. Following those threats, several members, including the secretary and assistant secretary, have left the area. One committee member has reportedly travelled overseas.
The latest development follows a deadly incident connected to the Devalaya committee last year.
On November 4, 2025, committee chairman Mirantha Warusavithana was shot dead near the Ambalangoda Urban Council. Police reporting identified him as the brother-in-law of Karandeniya Sudda.
Another investigation also involved the person who served as the Devalaya’s Kapuwa. Authorities arrested him through the Illegal Assets Investigation Division after investigators found that more than Rs. 330 million had moved through his bank accounts. Investigators further alleged that he handled financial affairs connected to Loku Patti.
The Ambalangoda Modara Perahera traditionally takes place every August through both daytime and nighttime processions. This year, however, organisers have decided not to proceed because of the security threats.
The cancellation underlines the growing impact that organised-crime intimidation can have beyond criminal networks, extending into religious and community events that have operated for generations.
