The government is focusing on eliminating vehicle permits and pensions for Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers. Sources from the government indicate that steps are being taken to secure Cabinet approval for the sale of 150 luxury vehicles currently owned by various ministries.
In addition, MPs will no longer be provided with high-end vehicles such as V8s and Monteros. The government is also evaluating changes to salaries and allowances for MPs and ministers, though no official decision has been made yet.
A special committee has been appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to review and assess the privileges granted to MPs and ministers. The committee’s recommendations will play a key role in determining future policies regarding these privileges.
Regarding firearms and firearms training for MPs, as well as housing provisions for public representatives, no definitive decisions have been made at this time.
Although a recent workshop for MPs was expected to address these issues, it is reported that the matter was not discussed in detail during the session. The government has yet to issue an official announcement on the changes to MP privileges, but arrangements are being made to ensure MPs have access to necessary housing and facilities until further decisions are finalized.
