Kushani Rohanadheera, the Secretary General of Parliament, has clarified that there has been no reduction in the privileges granted to Members of Parliament (MPs), and all existing benefits will continue as before. In her statement, she emphasized that MPs will continue to enjoy the same privileges they have had in the past, countering any claims suggesting otherwise.
Regarding the provision of official residences, Rohanadheera revealed that 35 applications have been received so far from MPs requesting accommodation in official housing. Currently, there are 108 MP houses available, out of which 80 are allocated for MPs from the ruling party and 28 for those from the opposition. Around 25 to 30 houses previously occupied by former MPs are undergoing renovations, and these will soon be ready for use. These renovated houses will be distributed based on priority needs of the MPs, with a focus on those requiring accommodation due to long travel distances to Parliament.
The Secretary General also noted that MPs whose homes are located more than 40 kilometers away from the Parliamentary complex are eligible to apply for official residences. These houses are considered essential for MPs who need a place to stay during the parliamentary sessions.
The arrangements underscore Parliament’s commitment to ensuring that MPs have the necessary accommodations to perform their duties effectively. Rohanadheera further reassured that the allocation process is being handled transparently and in line with established procedures.
