Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya revealed in Parliament today that she is facing a lawsuit for stepping on a flower pot during a protest.
Recalling the events of International Women’s Day last year, Amarasuriya spoke about the demonstration held at the Polduwa Junction, where female Members of Parliament were met with water cannons while advocating for women’s rights.
“I remember March 8 last year. Along with other female MPs, we faced water cannons during a protest at Polduwa. I came to Parliament that day drenched from the water cannons. A lawsuit was filed against us for stepping on a flower pot, and that case is still ongoing. Even when I was Prime Minister, I had to respond to it. It was through such struggles that we arrived where we are today,” she stated.
Amarasuriya further emphasized that when discussing the ‘76-year curse,’ it is primarily a political issue. She clarified that this does not mean disregarding the progress Sri Lanka has made over the years as the world continues to evolve.
