Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath posed a rhetorical question during a National People’s Power (NPP) rally held in Gampaha, drawing attention to the perceived transformation in the country under the new leadership.
“Did anyone see the First Lady frying Kavum & Kokis this New Year?” He asked, alluding to the symbolic image of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who was often photographed preparing kavum and kokis (traditional sweetmeats)during Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, a gesture of simplicity and connection with the people that was widely publicized during the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Herath used the moment to underline the change brought about during the past five months, suggesting that the contrast in leadership style grounded, relatable, and humble reflected a broader shift in the nation’s political culture.
