In a stunning admission, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe declared that even if public anger forces the current president out of office, the National People’s Power (NPP) will simply reinstall a new president through Parliament.
Speaking at a rally ahead of the local government elections, Ranasinghe brushed off hopes that fuel shortages, gas queues, or political crises would lead to meaningful change. “It’s just a dream to think that throwing out the government would end this,” he said. “If the country goes into turmoil again, the NPP will ensure that a new president is appointed — and it will be through Parliament, not the people.”
Ranasinghe emphasized that unlike during previous political shakeups, the National People’s Power now has a significant foothold in Parliament, allowing them to control any transition of power. “This time, it’s different. We’re already in Parliament. No matter what happens, we will decide who the next president is,” he said defiantly.
The remarks have triggered a political firestorm, with critics warning that the people’s voice could be sidelined once again — no matter how loud their protest.
