President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has vowed swift action against both the bus drivers and police officers involved in the controversial stop made by buses carrying National People’s Power (NPP) supporters on the expressway during the May Day rally.
Speaking on the popular Derana TV program 360, the President confirmed that he has already launched an inquiry into the matter and has called for a detailed report from the organizers responsible for coordinating transportation for the May Day event at Galle Face.
The incident, which saw several buses pulling over on the expressway for passengers to receive food, sparked public concern over safety violations and law enforcement inaction. According to the President, not only were traffic regulations breached, but the presence of passive police officers at the scene has raised questions about accountability and discipline.
“Legal action will be taken against the bus drivers who stopped illegally and against the police officers who stood by,” he stated firmly. “I have requested a written explanation from the organizers who allowed this to happen.”
The President’s comments have ignited debate on whether the rally’s logistics were properly planned, and whether political enthusiasm overshadowed public safety. His stance suggests a hardline approach toward enforcing discipline even within his own movement as part of a broader commitment to law and order.
As investigations proceed, all eyes are on what disciplinary measures will follow and how this might impact future large-scale political gatherings in the country.
