Colombo Mayoral Race in Limbo as NPP Falls Short of Majority
The 2025 local government elections have left the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) without a clear majority, setting the stage for intense political negotiations.
The National People’s Power (NPP) emerged as the largest party, securing 48 out of 117 seats. However, this falls short of the 60 seats required to unilaterally appoint a mayor, leaving their candidate, Vraie Cally Balthazar, without the necessary majority support.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) followed with 29 seats, and the United National Party (UNP) secured 13. Other parties and independents hold the remaining seats, making coalition-building essential for any party aiming to claim the mayoral position.
Next Steps: Coalition Talks Underway
With no party holding a clear majority, discussions are underway to form alliances. The NPP may seek support from smaller parties and independents to bolster Balthazar’s candidacy. Conversely, the SJB and UNP might collaborate to present an alternative candidate, potentially challenging the NPP’s position.
The outcome of these negotiations will determine the leadership of the CMC. Observers anticipate a resolution in the coming weeks as parties finalize their strategies and alliances.
This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
