For the second straight month in 2025, Sri Lanka’s national tea sales have taken a hit, signaling a worrying trend for one of the country’s most iconic exports.
According to the latest figures, the average national tea sales price in April dropped to Rs. 1,116.75 ($3.90) per kilogram, marking a Rs. 17.01 ($0.11) decrease from March’s average of Rs. 1,183.76 ($4.02).
The situation appears even more stark when compared to last year. In April 2024, the national average stood at Rs. 1,216.85 ($4.06) per kilogram meaning this year’s figure reflects a year-on-year drop of Rs. 100.10 ($0.15) per kilogram.
As global markets shift and local production challenges mount, industry experts are sounding the alarm, urging policymakers and stakeholders to act swiftly before Sri Lanka’s signature crop faces deeper decline.
