The opposition is reportedly weighing the possibility of launching a no-confidence motion in Parliament against Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, following mounting outrage over her alleged violation of election laws during the recent local government elections.
At the heart of the controversy is a public statement made by the Prime Minister during the mandated “silent period,” where she is said to have encouraged continued political campaigning in support of the National People’s Power (NPP), despite the legal prohibition on such activity after official campaigning ends.
Opposition voices are calling the statement a “serious breach” of election law, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent. A senior member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) confirmed that internal discussions have begun to determine whether formal proceedings should move forward, but emphasized that any action would need broad consensus across opposition lines and within the SJB parliamentary group.
While no formal motion has yet been filed, the growing pressure signals that Prime Minister Harini could soon be facing one of the strongest political challenges to her leadership yet one that may shake the foundations of the ruling coalition.
