Sarvajana Balawegaya leader and Member of Parliament Dilith Jayaweera has come forward to strongly refute claims made by the United National Party (UNP), accusing them of spreading misinformation involving his name in a high-stakes political move.
In a statement posted on social media, Jayaweera denounced the UNP’s assertion that he had participated—albeit remotely—via phone call in a recent opposition leaders’ meeting chaired by UNP leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. According to the UNP, the meeting focused on forming joint control in local government institutions where the National People’s Power (NPP) failed to obtain a majority.
The UNP had listed representatives from various political parties as participants in the meeting, and explicitly named Dilith Jayaweera as having joined the discussion over the phone.
But Jayaweera has called the claim an outright lie.
“I did not participate in any such meeting, nor did I join via phone as falsely stated,” Jayaweera clarified in his statement. He added that he immediately contacted UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, urging him to correct the misleading information without delay.
According to Jayaweera, Abeywardena acknowledged the request and assured that corrective action would be taken.
This public rebuttal adds a dramatic twist to the UNP’s efforts to forge a broader opposition alliance. Jayaweera’s swift denial raises serious questions about the UNP’s transparency and credibility in reporting the details of their political dealings.
The unfolding controversy puts additional pressure on the UNP to come clean—before more political players start calling out fabricated alliances and false narratives.
