In a chilling revelation made in Parliament today, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has received a serious death threat via email, prompting heightened security measures around her and the launch of an international investigation.
According to the minister, the threat was reported by an Additional Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office. Following the complaint, officials obtained technical data from Google linked to the email, which has reportedly been traced to locations in the Netherlands and Germany.
Minister Wijepala assured Parliament that Interpol (International Police) will be brought in to assist Sri Lankan authorities in pursuing the individuals or networks behind the threat. “This is not being taken lightly,” the minister said, adding that a full-scale investigation is already underway.
While no details were shared publicly regarding the content of the email, sources within the security apparatus described it as a credible and targeted threat, leading to immediate changes in the Prime Minister’s security detail.
In a separate incident, the minister also addressed rumors regarding Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. He revealed that authorities had investigated an alleged sniper plot involving a known underworld figure, “Loku Patty.” However, investigations ultimately dismissed the sniper threat as false.
The twin developments have rattled political circles in Colombo, raising alarms over the growing risks faced by national leaders. Civil society groups and political allies have since called for stronger cybersecurity protocols and intelligence collaboration to safeguard Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions.
As the investigation unfolds across borders, the focus now shifts to whether this threat is part of a broader conspiracy or an isolated incident designed to instill fear at the highest levels of government.
