A video clip circulating on social media since May 24 has shown a Filipino tourist being assaulted by a local employee at a surfing establishment in Weligama. The footage, which reignited public concern, was initially interpreted by many as a recent incident. However, police have confirmed that the assault occurred over a year ago, on February 14, 2024.
When contacted by Ada Derana, the Weligama Police clarified that the incident was previously reported, and legal proceedings are already underway. The case is currently being heard in the Matara Magistrate’s Court and is scheduled to be taken up again on September 11, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Police Media Division on May 24, the altercation began when the Filipino tourist, who was visiting Sri Lanka and filming his experiences in the Weligama area, recorded footage near a water-skiing training facility on Pelena Beach. An employee at the facility objected to being filmed. A verbal exchange escalated into physical violence, with the employee reportedly assaulting and kicking the tourist.
The 24-year-old suspect, a resident of Pelena, Weligama, was arrested by Weligama Police on the same day the incident occurred and was promptly produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
The Police Media Division emphasized that Sri Lanka Police has consistently taken immediate and appropriate action in such cases, especially those involving foreign tourists. Whether through formal complaints or viral social media videos, the police have made arrests and pursued legal action when evidence warrants it.
However, the police also expressed concern over the trend of past incidents being resurfaced on social media, often without context, and misrepresented as recent events. According to the statement, some individuals or groups appear to be sharing old videos repeatedly, possibly to portray the country in a negative light or for other undisclosed motives.
The police further stated that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the repeated circulation of outdated incidents. If found to be acting with malicious intent, legal action will be taken against them.
Authorities have urged the public to verify the authenticity and timing of such videos before sharing them, stressing that misinformation can damage the nation’s image and disrupt public order.
