Galle, May 27 — United National Party (UNP) Chairman and former Member of Parliament Vajira Abeywardena has issued a stark warning about the country’s trajectory, predicting that Sri Lanka will descend into an “unmanageable state” by the final quarter of 2025.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Galle, Abeywardena said the country is headed toward a major collapse between September and December, and that all opposition forces—especially the UNP—are strategizing to take control and stabilize the nation when the breakdown occurs.
“By September, October, November, December, Sri Lanka as a nation will again face a major decline, a major collapse, or a state where the country will be unmanageable,” he said.
He emphasized that the UNP and other allied opposition groups are already preparing a comprehensive recovery roadmap to safeguard the people and rescue national governance when the predicted crisis unfolds.
“We are thinking about taking necessary steps to recover the country that is falling, protect the public and protect the public,” he added.
The comments reflect increasing political tension as the country faces a fragile economic recovery, ongoing protests, and widespread public dissatisfaction. With elections looming and political alliances shifting, Abeywardena’s remarks are seen as an early signal of the UNP’s intention to reassert its role in national leadership.
