Colombo – Deputy Minister of Housing T. B. Sarath says the government has allocated a staggering Rs. 78 billion for farmers in just six months since assuming power in what was then a bankrupt country, reaffirming their commitment to rural revival and development.
Speaking at a public event, the Deputy Minister responded to criticism over the government’s progress by highlighting the significant financial support extended to the agricultural sector.
“There’s been much debate about what the government has achieved in six months,” he said. “But despite inheriting a bankrupt economy, we’ve managed to allocate seventy-eight billion rupees—Rs. 780,000 per farmer in some cases—within that short period.”
He emphasized that this was just the beginning, with many more initiatives on the horizon.
“There are many such programs in the pipeline. In the next two, three, or four years, we aim to launch numerous development projects to uplift people’s lives and drive long-term economic progress.”
The Deputy Minister’s statement underscores the government’s focus on the agriculture sector as a key driver of national recovery, even as questions continue to swirl around economic stability and broader structural reform.
