Colombo – May 30, 2025 — MP Lakmali Hemachandra has downplayed concerns surrounding the recent closure of a garment factory, stating that such events are a normal part of business operations and should not be politicized.
Speaking on the Derana Wadapitiya program, Hemachandra asserted that factory closures and reopenings are common and often based purely on internal business decisions. “Institutions are opened and closed from time to time. This isn’t unusual. It shouldn’t be unnecessarily politicized,” she said.
Referring to a case in Koggala, Hemachandra noted that although a factory had shut down there last year, it was soon restarted under new management. “This has nothing to do with trade union action or withdrawing foreign investments,” she added. “If a decision was made to close, it was simply the business choice of that company.”
She emphasized that Sri Lanka has experienced such industrial transitions before and that the public should not interpret every closure as a political failure or economic collapse.
