Sevanagala – May 30, 2025 — The Sevanagala Sugar Factory is reportedly on the brink of shutdown, with mounting allegations of mismanagement and administrative negligence contributing to its operational paralysis.
According to sugarcane growers in the region, the factory has ceased accepting sugarcane for processing, resulting in large quantities of the harvested crop being left to rot in open fields. Farmers warn that without urgent intervention, the facility could be permanently closed impacting not only the local economy but the livelihoods of hundreds of families.
“The harvest is ready, but there’s no one to take it in. It’s just sitting there, wasting away,” said one frustrated grower. “All because the people running the factory have no idea how this industry works.”
The farmers allege that none of the key officials currently managing the Sevanagala plant possess relevant experience or understanding of the sugar manufacturing process. They claim that the factory’s operational decline has been fueled by irregular administration, poor decision-making, and a lack of industry expertise at the top level.
Sevanagala has historically been a key contributor to Sri Lanka’s domestic sugar production, and the potential closure raises serious questions about the future of local agriculture, employment, and food security.
Growers are calling on the government to urgently investigate the factory’s management and take corrective action before the situation deteriorates beyond repair.
