Colombo – May 30, 2025 — Sri Lankan health officials have confirmed that the Covid-19 variants currently spreading in India and Malaysia have also been detected in Sri Lanka, according to Dr. Jude Jayamaha, a virologist at the Colombo Medical Research Institute.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Jayamaha revealed that genomic testing conducted by fellow virologist Dr. Janaki Abeynayake has confirmed the presence of Omicron subvariants LF.1 and NB 1.8.1 as the dominant strains circulating across the island.
Despite the detection of these new variants, Dr. Jayamaha urged the public not to panic. “There is no need for undue fear. These variants are being monitored closely, and preventive measures are in place,” he assured.
He advised vulnerable groups, particularly pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems to be especially cautious. Basic health practices such as wearing face masks, washing hands regularly, and avoiding crowded places remain effective in preventing transmission, he added.
Dr. Jayamaha also explained that the Colombo Medical Research Institute continues to routinely test swab samples collected from hospitals across all provinces, allowing for early detection and monitoring of variant trends.
“This is part of the natural evolution of the virus,” he noted. “While certain strains may become more active at different times, public awareness and responsible behavior are key to managing the situation.”
Health authorities are expected to release further updates as surveillance continues.
