Plantation Industries Minister Samantha Vidyarathna clarified that the government’s move to regulate social media and other media platforms should not be seen as a form of suppression. Speaking to reporters after a recent event, the Minister said regulation is a necessary step, just as it is in other sectors to ensure accountability and proper conduct.
He emphasized that these measures are not intended to curtail freedom of expression but rather to introduce controls similar to those adopted globally. “We’re not suppressing the media. But like in all fields, some level of regulation is essential,” he said, adding that any such steps will be taken only after discussions with relevant stakeholders.
The Minister also stressed that social media, in particular, has become a platform requiring oversight due to its increasing influence and potential for misuse.
