Colombo — A former top official who once held secretary posts at both a key Ministry and the Police Commission is now under scrutiny over allegations involving the misuse of $11 million in public funds. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has summoned the former secretary for questioning in connection with a controversial dairy cattle import project allegedly executed during her tenure in 2016–2017 under the Ministry of Rural Development.
The official, who is also the spouse of a retired senior member of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, is currently overseas. However, authorities confirm that she is expected to return to the country within the next few days, after which a full statement will be recorded.
The investigation centers on a project funded by $11 million in foreign exchange that was allocated to import dairy cattle—an initiative that, according to the complaint, never materialized. Sources claim that no cattle were imported, nor were there any visible project outcomes despite the substantial financial commitment.
The CID has opened a case file to probe possible financial misconduct, administrative negligence, or misappropriation of foreign funds during her period of service.
The scandal has sparked widespread concern in political and civil service circles, particularly given the seniority of the individuals involved. Calls for transparency and accountability are growing louder, as Sri Lanka continues to reel from a series of corruption revelations involving former government officials.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed whether other officials may also be implicated in the case.
