A clarification has been issued by the Director General of Government Information regarding recent media reports.
On the 30th of this month, a video circulated depicting an event during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to the Galkiriyagama area, where he had previously resided. During the visit, residents warmly welcomed the President, recalling fond memories of the time he served there as a mathematics teacher.
The video shows various villagers appreciating President Dissanayake, reminiscing about their shared past, and engaging in friendly conversation. It was a moment marked by personal connection and mutual respect.
However, the video was shared on the Facebook page of “Hiru News” with a misleading headline that stated, “You are remembered for the prices of goods.” The manner in which the event was reported presented an inaccurate and distorted interpretation of the interaction.
This misleading portrayal has caused concern. The Department of Government Information expresses deep regret over the publication of such false, irresponsible, and misleading media content.
Accordingly, the Department kindly requests that the false news report be corrected at the earliest opportunity.
Furthermore, the Department of Government Information urges all media outlets to uphold responsible journalism and to contribute to a media culture that respects facts and nurtures public trust.
