Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake lashed out at the government in Parliament today (04), accusing it of operating the country from within the Bribery Commission itself.
“This government is running a circus called Bribery Saranan Gachchami,” he said mockingly. “They arrest someone in the morning, send them off to Welikada or the Magazine Prison, and take them out again within a week. Then they put them back in. Let’s wait and see after all, it’s not Christmas every day.”
He went on to compare the severity of punishments, referring to a recent case involving the distribution of carrom boards: “If those who gave out carrom boards are getting sentenced to 20 or 25 years, then the Rila Minister should be given 40 years. They spent nearly a Rs. 10 million and not even a mango or a teacup was bought for a Rila. There was no benefit, no result. That was public money. If legal action is fair, then a 40-year prison sentence is what the Rila Minister truly deserves.”
