Opposition MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has cast serious doubt on the government’s claim of securing $650 million in foreign investment in the first quarter of 2025, calling the statement by Minister Sunil Handunnetti “completely false.”
Speaking on the Sirasa Ilakkaya program, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya parliamentarian challenged the government to provide evidence of such a substantial inflow. “If $650 million really came in, that would be a huge win for Sri Lanka. But where is it? Show us the data,” he said.
Dr. de Silva asserted that, to his knowledge, no such investment has entered the country and accused the government of misleading the public with unverifiable figures. “They claim these numbers, but there’s no transparency. No disclosures. As far as I know, this money doesn’t exist.”
He went on to say that the country is in desperate need of real foreign direct investment, not hollow announcements. “What we need is actual capital, actual jobs, and growth not headlines that collapse under scrutiny,” he concluded.
