The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is set to earn a staggering Rs. 268 billion following the recent 15% electricity tariff revision, according to Jayanath Herath, Communications Director of the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL).
This revision was approved upon CEB’s request. But here’s where it gets interesting CEB had claimed a loss of only Rs. 8 billion, while the revised tariff still nets them Rs. 268 billion in revenue.
Initially, the CEB had requested a total revenue of Rs. 276 billion, but the commission shaved off Rs. 8 billion, leading to a slightly lower tariff adjustment than the 18% hike the board originally proposed.
In the end, the commission approved a 15% revision, ensuring CEB would still gain Rs. 268 billion in income over the next seven months the duration for which the new pricing structure will be in effect.
PUCSL emphasized that this tariff structure is temporary and would apply only for the coming seven months, suggesting possible revisions again in early 2026.
